There are a class of drugs known as Benzodiazepines and within that class one will find Xanax and Ativan. Both these types of benzodiazepines are used to treat and relieve symptoms of anxiety disorders. Xanax and Ativan are highly addictive drugs and are therefore used only on short-terms plans. They are short-acting drugs but are quick to react in the body to successfully reduce the excessive anxiety one may be suffering from. Xanax and Ativan only take about 25 minutes for the symptoms to be alleviated and can help for up to a few hours.
GABA
In all of our brains we have GABA receptors. Benzodiazepines produce their calming effect by binding to specific sites on the GABA receptors. After a prolonged period of use, Long-term use of Xanax and Ativan can cause changes to the GABA receptors in the brain. Eventually an individual builds up a tolerance to these medications and requires them to take more and more dosages in order to produce the initial effects. When one has become physically addicted to these drugs, the symptoms of withdrawal will be felt as dosages are lowered. There are possible life threatening symptoms that can develop in withdrawal from these types of medications. Individuals should not attempt stopping the drugs without proper supervision. SYMPTOMS
There are many symptoms that can be associated with individual who are abusing or are addicted to Ativan or Xanax. Depression and anxiety are the most common yet one may also see hyperactivity, anger, and restlessness. The addicted person has changes in behavior as well. They may not be eating as much and can be seen carrying out risky behavior. They may also begin seeing many doctors to get more prescriptions and in some cases forged prescriptions are possible. Once the drugs are obtained, the user may begin taking higher doses or chewing dosages for a faster effect. Pills can also be crushed, snorted and smoked. The body begins having symptoms as well. The most common are dry mouth, coordination problems, sweating and dizziness. There are a myriad of other possible symptoms that may be noticed and are just as life-threatening. The addicted may notice frequent confusion and trouble concentrating. Memory problems are also common.
SIDE-EFFECTS
The side-effects from Ativan and Xanax vary among users but are always negative effects. The length of time an abuser has been active plays a large role in the extent of the side-effects. The user may also experience financial problems, isolation, nausea and vomiting. In the worst cases, a user – going through withdrawal – may have seizures or suicidal thoughts.
Because of the danger of withdrawing from Xanax addiction, it should only be done under the supervision of a licensed medical professional in a safe environment. In order to minimise the chances of the life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, the detox process should be designed to reduce the amount of Xanax that is administered, slowly. This is called titration.
