CONSIDERING REHAB IN LONDON? HERE'S WHY BALI BEGINNINGS IS WORTH YOUR ATTENTION
Discover why Bali’s rehab centre offers a unique path to lasting recovery with serene surroundings, expert care, and a holistic approach beyond London options.
Look. If you live in London and you've decided you actually need help with drugs or alcohol, the hardest part is already behind you. The deciding bit. The "I can't keep doing this" bit. Most people never get there. So if you have, well done, really.
What comes next is harder than it should be. Working out where to go. How to pay. What you're actually getting for your money, particularly when the headline price for a month at The Priory in Roehampton is more than most people pay for a small house deposit.
London has the most developed private addiction treatment market in the world, you know. The Priory, Castle Craig, Cassiobury Court, the Sanctuary, plus a long tail of clinics in Harley Street and across the home counties. It also has the most expensive private rehab in the world, an under-resourced NHS pathway that struggles with addiction specifically, and a media culture where being seen at the obvious place can end careers. So a meaningful number of London clients now look further afield than the Cotswolds.
So we wrote this. It's a walk-through of every realistic option a Londoner actually has. NHS. UK private (Priory and the rest). The boutique residential market. Intensive outpatient. And the international option. Real numbers. No hype. The trade-offs your intake call probably won't volunteer.
One thing to be straight about up front: this is written by a Bali-based rehab (us, Bali Beginnings), so yes, we've got a horse in this race. But we've tried to write the guide we wished existed when our own clients were trying to choose. Where Bali fits, we say so. Where it doesn't, we say that too. Honestly, we'd rather you go to the right place than just somewhere.
Figures throughout are GBP unless stated otherwise. Sourced from facility websites, NHS published data, and quotes obtained directly from facilities in Q1 2026. Treat them as guides. Always get a written, itemised quote before committing.
Every realistic option a London resident has
Most people who land on this page have heard of The Priory in Roehampton, possibly Castle Craig in the Scottish borders, and not much else. There's quite a bit more available, and the differences matter.
Filter the directory below to narrow by type. We've put it together for breadth, not for endorsement. Any of these can work for the right person and any of them can be the wrong fit. Call several, ask each the same specific questions, and decide based on the answers, not the brochure.
The Priory Hospital, Roehampton
Castle Craig Hospital
Cassiobury Court
Sanctuary Lodge
NHS local drug & alcohol services
Local-authority residential placement
Harley Street and private psychiatry
The Recovery Centre / Help4Addiction
Action on Addiction (Clouds House)
The Salvation Army
Bali Beginnings
Smarmore Castle / European options
The places listed above are the main categories of legitimate treatment available to a Londoner. This is not a ranking and not an endorsement. Call several, ask each one the same specific questions about clinical model, staffing ratios, what aftercare is included, and what isn't. A 20-minute phone call with the intake team usually tells you more than the website does.
What London rehab actually costs
London is the most expensive private rehab market in the world. Not "in Europe", not "among English-speaking countries". The world. The reason is mostly real estate and brand premium, with The Priory commanding the upper end of UK pricing on the strength of name recognition that goes back to the eighties.
UK private rehab: the real numbers
Priory tier (28 days): £60,000–£100,000 all-in. Private rooms, hospital-grade infrastructure, full psychiatric input, well-known name. The headline figure most Londoners have heard of.
Mid-tier private (28 days): £20,000–£40,000 at facilities like Cassiobury Court, Sanctuary Lodge, Castle Craig. Smaller settings, often quieter clinically, longer stays available.
UK private health insurance: most policies have minimal addiction-specific cover. Some cover psychiatric admission for dual diagnosis. Always call your insurer's mental health line specifically and ask about residential rehabilitation under your mental health benefit.
The duration problem hiding in plain sight
Most UK private programmes are 28 days. People assume that's the clinical recommendation. It isn't. It's a billing convention inherited from American insurance practice in the 1980s.
The clinical evidence on treatment duration is unambiguous. Programmes of 90+ days produce substantially better long-term sobriety outcomes than 28-day programmes. The 28-day standard persists because it's the standard private billing unit. Not because it's optimal.
A 28-day Priory programme: £60,000–£100,000.
A 90-day Bali Beginnings programme including return flights: £42,000–£44,000.
Three times the treatment duration. Less than half the cost.
Choose your target programme length. Bali figures use Bali Beginnings' actual 2026 rates, converted from AUD at roughly 0.52.
Bali Beginnings published rates: 28d £18,000 / 60d £30,000 / 90d £41,500 (converted from AUD $34,900 / $57,900 / $79,900). London-Denpasar return flights estimated £700–£1,200.
What you actually get for the money
It's worth being precise about what each price tier covers, because the marketing language across the UK private market often blurs the distinction.
| Element | UK mid-tier | Priory tier | Bali Beginnings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Private or shared | Private room | Private room |
| Group therapy | 5–8 sessions/wk | 8–12 sessions/wk | Daily |

| Medical detox | Usually included | Hospital-grade | Included; 24/7 medical |
| Aftercare | 3–6 months | 6–12 months | 24-month aftercare programme |
| Concierge logistics | No | Limited | Flights, visas |
| Privacy from UK media circles | Partial | No | Yes |
| Year-round outdoor program | No | No | Yes |
British clients fund Bali residential treatment through one of three routes, you know. Self-pay from savings, family contribution, or a personal loan structured for medical costs. Some private health insurers will reimburse a portion of overseas residential treatment if it's pre-authorised, but most won't, so check before assuming. The cost saving versus UK private is large enough that even fully self-funded, the numbers stack up against a single Priory month for many clients.
For high-net-worth families, the equation is often privacy first, cost second. For middle-income families self-funding, it's typically cost first, with the privacy benefit being a discovered bonus once they're actually here. Both groups make up the majority of our UK intake.
The Priory problem, and why the obvious answer is sometimes the wrong one
The Priory has been part of British professional vocabulary for forty years. It's the default. It's the place that gets named in newspaper articles, that pops up in every "where do celebrities go" piece, that becomes the punchline in stand-up routines about famous footballers. That cultural recognition is the brand's strength and, if you're trying to keep your treatment private, its weakness.
For some clients, this doesn't matter. Career stage, life stage, public profile, family setup, all change the calculation. But for a meaningful portion of London's professional, creative, and high-net-worth communities, being seen at The Priory carries its own cost. We've had clients who flew to Bali specifically because the alternative was a name that would have ended up in the diary pages.
"I knew if I went to the obvious place, it would get out within a week. The financial press would have it inside a fortnight. The thing that finally tipped me to Bali wasn't the cost. It was that nobody I worked with had any reason to be there."

Privacy isn't just for the famous
You don't have to be a household name for being seen at the obvious London rehab to matter, you know. London's professional communities are smaller than they look from outside. The City. The legal firms. The Square Mile. Mayfair private equity. Kensington and Chelsea social networks. Senior public sector. Senior media. The arts establishment. Each of these is a village. People in them know each other. And the obvious answer to "where would you go" is the same answer for everyone in those villages, which is the problem.
Going to Bali removes the calculation entirely. You're not at The Priory. You're not at Castle Craig. You're not on any flight or in any taxi that anyone in your network would notice. You're 14 hours away in a country where nobody has any reason to be looking for you, in a setting that, if anyone asks, you can describe as a wellness retreat with a clear conscience. Because in clinical terms, it actually is. Just a quite specific kind.
If your support network is in London, returning home after treatment puts you back into the same triggers that contributed to the problem. The clinical case for being away during treatment is strong. The case for having structured support waiting when you return is just as strong. We build a London-based aftercare plan into every UK programme, including a recommended local therapist if you don't have one. The geographic separation is a tool, not the whole strategy.
Why some London clients still choose UK private
If you're medically complex, if you have caring responsibilities you can't transfer for two months, if your support system is fragile, if you have a serious psychiatric condition needing close hospital oversight, a UK hospital-tier facility is the better option. The Priory is genuinely good at what it does. So is Castle Craig. We say no to clients who would be safer there, and refer them onwards. Quality of clinical fit matters more than where it happens.
What actually happens week by week, and why 28 days is often too short
Almost every UK private programme runs 28 days. Most clients assume that's the clinical recommendation. It isn't. It's a billing convention. Use the toggle below to see how a residential programme actually unfolds week by week, and why programmes of 60 to 90 days produce the long-term outcomes that 28-day programmes often don't.
Multiple long-term outcome studies (NIDA in the US, the National Treatment Outcome Research Study in the UK, and others) consistently show treatment duration as one of the strongest predictors of sustained recovery. There's a substantial step-up in outcomes between 28-day and 90-day programmes. Outcomes plateau somewhere around 6 months for most addiction types. This is well-established and not really controversial in addiction medicine. The gap between what's clinically optimal and what's commercially standard is widely acknowledged but rarely discussed at intake.
For most London clients we speak to who can afford 28 days at a UK private facility, the maths to extend to 60 days at Bali Beginnings is roughly: less than half the budget, double the programme duration, return flights from London included, and the 24-month aftercare programme bundled. The financial case is overwhelming. The clinical case is overwhelming. The privacy case is a bonus. We mention this without subtlety because the maths is what it is.
London to Bali, exactly how it works
Two questions almost every UK client asks before they commit: How do I actually get there? and What does the day-to-day look like once I'm there? Here's the unembellished version. No marketing tone. Just what you need to know.
Flights, visas, transit
- London to Denpasar: typically 14–16 hours total via one stop. Usual routings via Singapore (Singapore Airlines, British Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar), or Hong Kong (Cathay). Return economy fares from £700–£1,200 in most seasons. Premium economy and business available at additional cost.
- Visa: stays under 30 days are visa-free for British passport holders. For 60-day stays, a Visa-on-Arrival is straightforward and Bali Beginnings handles the extension paperwork on your behalf.
- Transit: a nominated team member meets you at Denpasar Ngurah Rai airport and drives directly to the facility. You don't manage Bali traffic, taxis, or arrival logistics in the state you'll be in.
- Time difference: Bali is GMT+8, so seven or eight hours ahead of London depending on the time of year. Worth knowing for family contact scheduling, but jet lag tends to resolve quickly with the structured routine.
- Communication: phones and laptops are restricted during the first phase of the programme (consistent with clinical best practice in residential addiction treatment), with structured family contact built in. We coordinate with families on what to expect.
- Travel insurance: standard UK travel insurance covers most contingencies. We'll advise on what to look for in the policy.
Light clothing for tropical weather. Swimwear, comfortable shoes for outdoor work, a light long-sleeve for cooler evenings. Toiletries you specifically need, everything basic is provided. Any current prescription medications in original packaging with a recent script from your GP. We send a full packing checklist on intake.
What Bali specifically offers that London can't
- Complete environment change. Recovery research is unambiguous that early-phase treatment benefits enormously from removal from the environmental triggers (places, people, routines) tied to the addictive behaviour. Bali achieves this completely. Even premium UK facilities cannot, because you remain inside the same cultural and social world where the problem developed.
- Year-round outdoor programme. Tropical climate means daily outdoor therapeutic work (walking, surfing, yoga, breathwork) is built in. UK winters and London property prices both work against this in a meaningful way.
- 60- and 90-day programmes as standard. UK private programmes are almost exclusively 28-day. Bali Beginnings runs longer programmes by default, with the per-day rate dropping the longer you stay.
- Cost. A point worth saying plainly. The same clinical hours, same medical oversight, same 1:1 therapy time costs about a quarter to a third of a Priory-tier programme. The savings come from operating costs, not corner-cutting on care.
- Concierge management. Flights, visa, communication-script support for the conversations with employers and family. We handle what we can.
What Bali doesn't offer (and shouldn't pretend to)
Bali isn't the right answer for everyone. We say no to clients fairly often. Specifically: if you have an active acute psychiatric condition requiring close hospital-grade monitoring, if you're medically unstable in ways that make long-haul air travel risky, if your support system is so fragile that 4–12 weeks abroad would cause it to collapse, or if you have small children whose primary care is your sole responsibility. UK hospital-tier programmes (The Priory, Castle Craig) are the better option in those cases. We refer onwards. Quality of care matters more than where it happens.
Is international treatment right for you?
This isn't a clinical assessment. It's just a structured way to think through the factors that actually matter when you're choosing between UK private, UK charity sector, and the international option. Six questions. Takes about two minutes.
FAQ, the complete list
The questions UK readers ask us most, with direct answers. If yours isn't here, email us at info@rehabbali.com and we'll add it.
Sometimes. It depends entirely on the policy. Most UK personal private medical insurance policies have either no addiction cover or very limited cover for residential treatment, and that's before you ask whether overseas treatment is reimbursable. Call your insurer's mental health line specifically (not the general number) and ask three things: do you cover residential addiction treatment under any circumstances, is there a cap on the daily rate, and do you reimburse for treatment outside the UK with prior authorisation. Get the answer in writing. If the answer is yes with caps, the maths often still favours overseas treatment because the cap rarely covers a full UK private programme either.
For local-authority funded residential placement, expect 3 to 9 months from initial referral. Some boroughs are faster, some are much slower. Outpatient and pharmacotherapy through community drug and alcohol services (Turning Point, Change Grow Live, WDP) is faster, sometimes within weeks. Crisis pathways exist for high-acuity presentations and can move within days. If you're considering the NHS pathway, get on the waiting list immediately. You can decline a placement later, but you cannot retroactively shorten the wait.
If you have a comorbidity that needs close specialist oversight (active liver disease, cardiac conditions, severe psychiatric illness needing frequent medication adjustment, late-stage pregnancy), a UK hospital-affiliated programme is the better option. The Priory and Castle Craig both have hospital-grade medical infrastructure for exactly this scenario. Bali is genuinely excellent for the large category of clients without these complications, but we will say no and refer onwards if the medical complexity sits outside what we can safely manage. Honesty about this is the first thing to ask any facility you're considering.
Co-occurring depression, anxiety, PTSD, or trauma-related conditions are the rule, not the exception. They show up in the majority of people who present for addiction treatment. A good programme treats both together. Treating addiction in isolation rarely produces durable recovery. Bali Beginnings has psychologists and trauma-informed clinicians on the team for this reason. For more acute psychiatric presentations (active mania, psychosis, severe eating disorder, recent serious self-harm) a hospital-based programme is the right first step, which usually means the Priory's psychiatric provision or NHS placement.
Honestly, with effort, planning, and the support of a partner, family member, or trusted friend who can carry the load. We've supported many parents through extended programmes, and the answer is always individual to the family situation. What we will say is that untreated parental addiction is far more damaging to children long-term than a parent being absent for two months in residential treatment and returning genuinely well. Decisions about timing, communication with children, and family involvement are part of intake planning. Some families fly to Bali for a structured visit during the programme.
Bali is a major international tourist destination with a well-developed private healthcare sector that serves the expat and tourist populations. The hospitals we use for any medical referrals are international-standard. The facility itself is medically supervised with 24/7 medical cover during the detox phase. For complications that exceed our scope, evacuation to Singapore (5 hours by air) or back to the UK is a standard insured pathway, and we hold the relationships and protocols to action it quickly. The medical safety record across our years of operation is comparable to what you'd expect from a UK private rehabilitation facility.
Pro-rata refunds apply for documented medical evacuation or family emergency. We discourage early discharge for any other reason. The period when "I want to leave" feels strongest is usually the period when staying matters most clinically. But you are not held against your will, and the team will work with you if you want to leave. Specific terms are in the intake agreement and we walk every prospective client through them before deposit. This is intentionally not a hard sell.
Mornings: early start, light exercise (yoga, walking, or surfing depending on phase), breakfast, group therapy session. Late morning to early afternoon: individual therapy or specialist programming (trauma work, CBT/DBT skills, breathwork). Afternoon: structured group work, psychoeducation, meals together. Late afternoon: free time and reflective practice. Evening: 12-step or alumni-style meeting, dinner, structured downtime. The day is full but not relentless. Rest is part of the programme.
Bali Beginnings includes a 24-month aftercare programme as part of the standard package. That covers structured weekly online group support with our therapists, peer-support calls with alumni, and individual check-ins with a recovery coach. We coordinate with a London-based therapist of your choice for in-person ongoing work, and we'll suggest names if you don't have one. The aftercare phase is what determines whether the gains made in residential treatment hold long-term. It's the most underweighted factor in how people choose a programme. It's also the most important.
Your decision, your call. It depends on your role, contract, and relationship with your employer. Many UK clients use long-service leave, accumulated annual leave, or a non-specific medical leave certificate from a GP. Some employers (particularly in finance, legal, and the public sector) have employee assistance programmes that can help fund or support treatment confidentially. We help clients think through the script for these conversations during pre-intake but never communicate with employers ourselves. The window between deciding to seek help and starting tends to be narrow. Don't wait until everything is perfectly arranged before you commit.
Typically within 5 to 10 days of an initial conversation, depending on your circumstances and bed availability. The intake assessment, flight booking, and pre-departure prep can all run in parallel. This is one of Bali Beginnings' significant practical advantages over UK NHS pathways (3–9 month wait) and even most UK private facilities (which often have 2–4 week intake queues during peak periods). The window between deciding to seek help and actually beginning treatment is a critical period. We structure to keep it short.
