Cocaine Side Effects

It affects the rewarding pathway of the brain to create a delusion of euphoria. Therefore, it is extremely addictive and it’s craving can make people act in a disparate way. It travels through the bloodstream and enters the brain. On it’s way it may cause serious damage to the respiratory tract, circulatory system, digestive system and kidneys.

From the blood it reaches the brain – here it stimulates the key receptors of pleasure and creates a state of intense excitement and happiness.. but as it wears off, it causes the opposite effects, of extreme depression and restlessness. With its frequent use the user quickly develops a tolerance to it. So it requires a higher quantity every time to bring the same effect.

Cocaine users experience evaluated heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure and body temperature. Short term side effects of continuous usage of cocaine can range from formication, mydriasis, dry mouth, nausea, hallucinations and psychosis to spike in pulse rate. Spike in blood pressure may cause ringing in the ears.

Cocaine intake may results in seizures, respiratory failure, convulsions, sudden cardiac death or a stroke from the blot clots in brain.

The long term use of cocaine can cause the tissue in the brain to deteriorate due to cerebral hemorrhaging caused by increased blood pressure. It’s early symptoms can be noticed as a lack of concentration, disability to grasp things quickly and short-term memory loss. When cocaine enters our body it causes a constriction of blood vessels in the brain and heart due to the lack of oxygen. This would in turn would lead to formation of clots in the blood vessels of heart, brain and intestine, resulting in irregular heart rhythms which may leads to strokes and heart attacks.

Many cocaine addicts suffer from depression, anxiety, paranoia and sleep disorders. Some also suffer from shakes with the long term deterioration of brain. It’s frequent use causes ulcer diarrhea, a loss of appetite and dehydration in a person that results in severe weight loss. These side effects would bring about changes in the personality and people become insensitive to all these issues with their addiction to cocaine.
