It is no doubt healthy to exercise daily. But, as we know, an excess of anything is bad. Excessive exercise can lead to a troublesome behavioral addiction. Yet, it is not classified as a disorder. Too much exercise will make a person restless. If an addict does not rest properly, it might affect his personal and professional life. Restlessness may aggravate anxiety, depression, aggression, palpitation, and mood swings.
Exercise addiction might be related to the euphoric feelings it produces in the addicted person. This feeling comes out along with the release of endorphins that increases the desire to exercise more. Endorphins act on opiate receptors leading to a decline in the feeling of pain due to exacerbation and exhaustion. This positive feedback will increase the intensity and frequency of exercise. Exercise will make an individual’s body slim and fit but too much exercise will make your body much too lean along with a breakdown of muscles.
THE SIMPLE THINGS
Treatment of this addiction could be simple yoga, walking, or meditation. Try to stay busy so that you do not have time to think about exercising. Stay away from exercise for at least a month. Try to engage in small activities like reading, writing, cooking, watching movies, playing, and enjoying parties, fun, gardening, etc. When you start engaging in other activities, you can keep yourself away from this addiction. When you feel you have rehabilitated yourself, you can start exercising again with less intensity and frequency to keep yourself physically and mentally fit.
